Individualized Tutoring

Individualized tutoring allows you to work at your own pace and in the learning style with which you are most comfortable, to increase your skills and confidence. My areas of specialty include mathematics, reading comprehension, writing, general science, biology, chemistry, physics, test preparation, homework help, study skills, college essays and applications. We can work together to tailor a program to meet your academic needs and ensure that you succeed. I currently work with students fourth grade through college-level and support home school and independent students.

In-Person and Online Tutoring Available
I work with students online or in-person for test prep and college applications, independent study, or for regular tutoring sessions. I meet online via Zoom, using shared documents and an interactive whiteboard. I meet in person in the Petaluma area. Please contact me for more information.

Summer and Fall 2023
I am now accepting students for summer and reserving spots for fall 2023

Summer is the time to catch up on concepts or to polish skills in writing, math or reading comprehension.  If this year was a struggle in one of the key curricular areas, reviewing or previewing in the summer can help ease the transition into next year. Summer enrichment can keep skills sharp and allow stuents to get ahead while pursuing some personal academic interests. It is also the best time to prepare for the SAT and ACT and work on college entrance essays so you don't have to fit this in during the busy school year. I also offer summer school support.

I provide a 4-7 week individualized summer program.

Spanish I and II review/preview

My Experience:

I have tutored students covering a wide range of grade levels (3rd through college), subject areas, and skill-levels.

Many students come to me for help in math and I find a variety of approaches can help students grasp difficult concepts. Some students have missed basic math concepts in the past, leading to difficulty moving forward into new topics or are struggling to develop a broader problem-solving approach. Other students need to review and practice the concepts at their own pace, or in a way that addresses their particular learning style. For some, previewing the math for the upcoming week allows them to feel more comfortable when they face it in class. Finally, many students have no idea how to "study" math. I am able to help develop strategies to study for math tests, and to help students figure out how they learn best.

In addition to math, many students ask for help in science, history, English and Spanish. In science classes, students may need to have concepts reexplained in new ways, be given extra resources, shown how they might visualize concepts, and have help solving problem sets or studying for tests. Study skills and helping students figure out how they learn best is key. Often, time management skills can help young people become more successful. Other students need help learning to read for a particular purpose, annotating or note taking or finding strategies for memorization. In AP classes, specific test-taking strategies need to be learned and practiced.

I also work as a writing coach, whether it is writing for school assignments, college essays, creative writing or practicing for essay writing on tests. My approach is to help with the pre-writing process (research, brainstorming, inspiration, reading models of exemplary writing), then organization of material, thesis development, writing the first draft, editing for content, style and grammar, ending with a final draft. The process of writing is as important as the finished piece. It is a priority for me that writers develop their own style and voice and find topics about which they feel passionate, while also polishing grammar, vocabulary, spelling and other details of editing.

I work with students individually to prepare for ACT, PSAT, SAT, SSAT, AP and other tests. An individualized program allows students to address their personal needs, rather than follow a set review course. One of my particular strengths is teaching test-taking strategies and techniques, in addition to review of the subject matter covered. The essay portion of these tests will go much more smoothly with a bit of specific preparation ahead of time.

I love being able to help someone understand material that they have been struggling with, and to watch as they refine their skills and increase their confidence. I hold both multiple subject and single subject mathematics California teaching credentials, and have taught in a wide variety of settings prior to working as a tutor. Because of my teaching credential, I have had fingerprinting and background checks, but I also have many local references available.
